Wide-reaching symptoms and deficits
A number of people were raised thinking (and/or remain under the impression) that concussion brain injury equates to “seeing stars” or having a headache, which is remedied by resting in a dark room.
This said, you may be surprised to learn how wide-reaching the effects of this common injury can be. Check out the symptom categories below, which include a few of my personal struggles as the examples given.
Cognitive
Problems with focus, attention, planning, multitasking, language comprehension, reading, learning new concepts, memory
Physical
Extreme daily fatigue, heart rate variability issues, dizziness and severely deregulated sleep, extreme light and sound sensitivity
Behavioural
Anxiety, depression, frequent and unpredictable crying episodes, PTSD
Emotional
Ex: Anger, sadness, overall emotional deregulation
The majority of cases recover in days to weeks, but some are eventually considered as Post Concussion Syndrome (PCS). This means that the deficits can limit a person’s life for years, and even remain permanently.
